The term can have three main meanings: 1. in its broader terms, all impermanent dharmas, acting as causes, are called saṁskāra (“producers”, “makers”, “factors”), such as in the expression “Factors are indeed impermanent” (anityā bata saṁskārāḥ); 2. in the context of the five aggregates, saṁskāra refers to all those elements of causation (“producers”, “makers”, “factors”) that are not included within the other four aggregates; according to some types of Abhidharma, this includes only mental factors that function together with the mind, while according to others (such as the Vaibhāṣika), it also includes factors that do not operate together with the mind; 3. in the context of the twelve limbs of dependent arising, saṁskāra has the more restricted sense of karmically efficient factors that determine the consciousness that will constitute the beginning of a new life.<br />



It is to be noted that saṁskāra can only refer to impermanent dharmas, never to permanent entities such as the three non-produced dharmas.<br />

How are they possessed of fear? As the Arhats (the Saints of the Vehicle of Śrāvaka), though having extirpated rebirth, have not yet destroyed the Impression [of Defilements], there therefore exists always and constantly a strong notion of fear in all physical life, as if standing in face of the executioner with raised sword. So they have not attained the ultimate delightful Deliverance.<br />

  เพราะชาติเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีชรา มรณะ โสกะ ปริเทวะ ทุกข์ โทมนัส อุปายาส<br />
  เป็นอันว่ากองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนั่นย่อมเกิด ด้วยประการฉะนี้.<br />
อนึ่ง เพราะอวิชชานั่นแหละดับโดยไม่เหลือด้วยมรรคคือวิราคะ สังขาร จึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะสังขารดับ วิญญาณจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะวิญญาณดับ นามรูปจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะนามรูปดับ สฬายตนะจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะสฬายตนะดับ ผัสสะจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะผัสสะดับ เวทนาจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะเวทนาดับ ตัณหาจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะตัณหาดับ อุปาทานจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะอุปาทานดับ ภพจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะภพดับ ชาติจึงดับ<br />
                          เพราะชาติดับ ชรา มรณะ โสกะ ปริเทวะ ทุกข์ โทมนัส อุปายาส จึงดับ<br />
             เป็นอันว่ากองทุกข์ทั้งมวลนั่นย่อมดับ ด้วยประการฉะนี้.<br />
