In its broadest meaning, vijñāna is defined as the specific cognition of an object/domain (viṣaya-prativijñapti; vastu-vijñapti, etc.). <br />In the context of the five aggregates (skandha), it is said to be taught last as it is the most difficult to recognize; it constitutes the most basic aspect of mind (citta), apprehending the mere object rather than its features (viśeṣa), as the mental factors (caitta) do. <br />In the context of the twelve links of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda), it refers specifically to the linking consciousness between one life and the next. <br />
